Frosted glass, also known as matte glass or opaque glass, is commonly used for doors and windows in offices, kitchens, dining rooms, and bathrooms, creating a beautifully diffused effect. It’s also employed as room dividers—frosted on the lower portion and fully transparent above—offering a tantalizing interplay of visibility and concealment that’s truly captivating.
Frosted glass is produced by mechanically sandblasting ordinary glass and then manually polishing it—typically with abrasive materials such as emery—to create a rough, uneven, hazy, and translucent surface. In some cases, chemical treatments, such as hydrofluoric acid etching, are applied after sandblasting.
Frosted glass is characterized by a rough surface that causes light to undergo diffuse reflection as it passes through, allowing light to transmit while preventing clear visibility. When light strikes frosted glass, it scatters in all directions after reflecting off the uneven surface—since the glass’s surface is not smooth—and this scattering prevents a coherent image from reaching the retina of our eyes. As a result, we cannot see clearly—or at all—what lies behind the glass.
So, what are the advantages of frosted glass? Let me briefly outline them below.
(1) Frosted glass offers excellent sound insulation, as it is often used as a secondary material in the production of soundproof glass.
(2) Frosted glass is highly safe, as it is classified as a type of safety glass. It is shatter-resistant and also resistant to abrasion. (Since it has been specially ground, it can withstand wear without damage and is more durable than ordinary glass.)
(3) Frosted glass is a convenient choice for privacy, as it’s often used in indoor spaces like offices and bathrooms—providing visual opacity while still allowing light to pass through, creating a soft, hazy aesthetic. At the same time, it effectively safeguards privacy without compromising transparency.
